Residents angry about shoddy contract work

-

RESIDENTS of Silverglen Drive in Silverglen say the incomplete contract work of companies hired by the municipality has caused damage to their cars and poses a safety hazard.

Community leader Logan Chetty said the footpath had been cut and tarred almost a month ago, but no proper procedures had been followed to cover up the work done by the contractors.

“The issues include damage to cars, lack of access to homes due to shoddy workmanship, and safety issues.

“We have contacted the contractor, who has given us no help.

“If this is supposed to be municipality work, why are there no supervisors on site?”

Chetty said problems were worst during load shedding.

Ronnie Naidoo, 64, said his guests’ cars had also been damaged.

“I find it absolutely pathetic that work was left undone.

“Residents are now the ones bearing the brunt of this poor work. It looks like no one, including the city, is taking any interest in our concerns,” he said.

He said the municipality needed to “reconsider who they give their tenders to”.

Another resident, Peter Voratharaya, 59, said the workers had just cut out the footpath and then discontinued the repairs.

“We feel miserable and our children cannot play outside because we are afraid they may get injured. All we ask is that the municipality revisit the work done and make alternative plans to get this fixed,” said Voratharaya.

Head of Communications for eThekwini Municipality, Tozi Mthethwa, said Kaylee’s Civil was a sub-contractor to the city’s main contractor Aqua Transport.

Kaylee’s Civil had not responded to the allegations by the time of going to print.

Mthethwa said the matter was being investigated.

“The project manager will contact the complainant and advise him on the process for lodging an insurance claim for damages,” she said.
