Aug 23: Open Day, Durban Radio Boat Club. Venue: Model Yacht Pond at Blue Lagoon at 9.30am-12.30pm. Various sections will be displayed. These sections are Scale (scale replicas of real boats), Power (both nitro and electric) and Sail (Lasers and International One Metre). King and Queen of the Mountain series: The Capital climb, in addition to celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, will also incorporate the first leg of the newly launched King and Queen of the Mountain series. This series incorporates four 15km races, which will recognise and reward all athletes who compete in a minimum of three of the four events. The others are: Nov 22: Mineshaft hosted by Queensburgh Harriers; Dec 6: The StainBank Cup hosted by Yellowwood Park AC; Dec 13: The Illovo Christmas Challenge hosted by Westville AC. He was the first South African to brave the monster waves of Mavericks, winning the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational in the biggest and heaviest waves ever recorded in the history of the sport. All three events in the series are sanctioned by Surfing SA and carry 3A PST (Pro Surf Tour) ratings points with a total prize purse of R108 000 on the line. Divisions in the series and final event include open mens, U20 junior boys and U16 junior boys. Start Time: 7.30am. Venue: Nagle Dam Picnic Site. Entries include First Ascent running top, cap, massage, voucher, burger and drink on the finish line. Start Times: 40k, 7:30am; 20k, 8:00am; 10k, 8:30am. Registration: 6:30am. Entry Limit: 500. Compulsory equipment: Runners on the 40km and 20km must carry 2l of hydration and a cellphone. Water tables: Every 10km, 40km has three, 20km has two and the 10km has one. Route Descriptions: Runners doing the longer courses will circumnavigate the entire dam, as well as explore parts of the river above the dam. The short course cuts through the middle of the dam using a tunnel and runs around the bottom half of the dam. Aug 29: The Mandela Day Trail Run takes place for the second time as part of the greater Mandela Day Marathon event. The main race will be extended to 15km. Entries are limited to 200 runners per distance to ensure that the trails don’t get overcrowded. Venue: Mandela Capture Site, Howick. Start Time: 6:30am. Registration: 5am at the Start Venue on Race Day. Distances: 4km, 8km, 15km. Entry Fees: 4km, R60; 8km, R90; 15km, R120. Entry includes race T-shirt and finisher’s medal. Each distance is limited to 200 runners and entries will close when the cap is reached or on Wednesday, 27 August, at 5pm. Prizes: The Mandela Day prize money totals R54 000.
