Young football star is dreaming of Anfield

- THAHIR ASMAL

MACALIN Owen Peters dreams of walking through the tunnel and touching the legendary “This is Anfield” sign at Liverpool.

The 15-year-old central defender currently captains the Liverpool Academy in Durban. Playing in the Barclays English Premier League is a long-term goal for Peters, but right now he wants to focus on his development as a junior player.

“Having professional coaches and learning tactics have helped me finetune my skills,” said Peters.

“It’s a dream come true to be part of an international academy and (brings me) a step closer to my (ultimate) dream of playing football overseas. The academy has helped me up my game and has redefined why I love the sport.”

The Phoenix teenager, who goes to Stanmore Secondary School, began playing football at the age of five.

“My parents, Colin and Dashinee, encouraged me as they are involved in football,” he said. “I’m from the family of George Ramalu, which carries a great legacy in football.”

Peters says he appreciates the value football adds to his life. “I love the sport, the excitement and the satisfaction of being part a team. I enjoy doing my part and having an awesome time on the field. The rush of winning a game is amazing.”

Peters began playing for Danefield FC under the banner of Safa Phoenix.

He moved to Juventus, where he helped the team win a league and cup double in the Durban and Districts League. Then he returned to his home town to play for Phoenix Sporting.

His defensive stability helped Sporting win the league undefeated and claim the division’s knock-out cup.

“I see myself playing abroad and one day for Liverpool FC,” he said. “I have a vision (and) I’ve set goals for my career.”

There may be a long road ahead, but the youngster is not afraid of hard work. Like his hero, Argentina and Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano, Peters wants to establish himself as a utility defender who can also contribute to his team’s goal tally.

“This is an important season for me,” he said. “I’ll have to keep working hard, gain more speed and improve my skills.”
