Narandas family in ‘theft’ investigation

- NABEELAH SHAIKH

CONTROVERSIAL Durban businessmen Rajiv Narandas was at the centre of a theft debacle this week when his father laid a charge against him of stealing valuables from his business.

Narandas allegedly went into one of the family’s jewellery stores after the doors were locked and activated the alarm.

When his father, Krish Narandas arrived, he said he discovered that a computer hard drive, cash, diamonds and passport had been stolen.

Police confirmed that the hard drive, documents and passport had since been recovered.

Spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that no arrests had been made.

However, Rajiv Narandas had a different story to tell.

He alleged that there was no such case and that the police had created a false charge to enter his premises.

He alleged the police had trespassed on his Westville property for more than 50 minutes during which they stole more than R2.5 million worth of his moveable assets.

“There are no theft charges from my dad against me.

“The police have formed this so they get permission to enter my gate.

“I have evidence pertaining to them having no permission and all evidence proving them being unlawful on camera and in voice recordings. I have lawyers handling the matter for me and it has been reported to Ipid (the Independent Police Investigative Directorate),” said Narandas.

He said that he and his dad spent their days together in his offices, and at home, forming new rentals in the town.

When contacted for comment regarding the incident, Krish Narandas giggled and said that it wasn’t true.

After the Sunday Tribune was able to confirm the case with the police, in a follow-up call, Krish Narandas said that he had difficulty hearing and could not respond to questions.

Last year, Rajiv Narandas was sentenced to 18 years for the murder of Veenand Singh in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg after a six year trial.

The court found Narandas guilty of stabbing Singh, a former Altech manager and a Buccleuch resident, during a brawl in the parking lot of a Sandton nightclub in 2008.

He has appealed against the judgment and sentencing and is out on bail.
