SPECT(RE) ACULAR
STARS DAZZLE AT 007 PREMIERE
South Africa’s top models to shame.
First lady Thobeka Zuma arrived late, even though the MC for the evening, rapper Proverb, had said she was present. She arrived wearing a black ensemble with a silver turban. But what grabbed my attention were her black stockings encrusted with diamante.
It was refreshing not seeing the whole cast of soapie Uzalo at the show. Those actors put socialite Jen Su to shame. They are virtually everywhere.
Only three cast members – Kay Sibiya, Naymaps Maphalala and Ntokozo Dlamini – were present and thankfully didn’t go around m a k i n g themselves a nuisance to other guests, as their colleagues normally do. They were at the back of the room chilling with DJ Tira and boy band Dream Team.
Part of the evening was dedicated to the launch of Sorisha Naidoo’s and Haroun Hansrot’s capsule collection, H&S, and the models on the show were scouted by Fresh Faces.
The collection featured black cocktail dresses and swimwear. Interestingly, the swimwear had silver safety pins. Is that going to be a new trend for accessories?
A highlight was performances from Vusi Nova and Nomvula hit-maker Nathi Mankayi. Nova did a commendable job of the Spectre theme song, The Writing’s On The Wall. Mankayi performed Nomvula and had many of the guests singing along.
It was a great night out – an improvement from the Skyfall party of 2012. Now if only there was more food instead of just sushi and other canapés? Driving home, we saw many guests at the McDonald’s drive- through and that’s never a good sign after attending an event.
S p e c t re itself was the lowlight of the evening. Not only is it too long (two-anda-half hours) but the story just didn’t warrant all that extravagance.
Sam Mendes did a good job with Skyfall and making Bond conscious but maybe it’s time for Martin Campbell to make a return.
He directed Casino Royale and Golden Eye, two of arguably the best Bond movies in the franchise.
