WITH his hands firmly gripped on the handlebar of his Kore bicycle, Bell helmet firmly secured and feet on the peddles, Navin Padayachi paints a picture of a businessman passionate about cycling.

The managing director of Hattons Cycles is steering his company into a century of being at the centre of KwaZulu-Natal’s cycling culture.

“Hattons Cycles had its beginnings in London before relocating to South Africa. It has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1915,” he said.

The business was bought by his father, N S Padayachi, in 1985.

“I worked alongside my father since 1985, learning the tools of the trade. I began honing my skills as a mechanic in the workshop and later the administration of the business.

“After my dad retired in 1998, I took over, expanding the business to its current three branches.”

Hattons Cycles are prominent retailers, wholesalers, importers and exporters of a wide range of quality brand bicycles, spares and accessories.

“Giant, GT, Avalanche, Axis and Titan are just some excellent brands we supply. We are passionate about cycling as a sport and healthy lifestyle choice.”

Hattons Cycles actively supports and participates in many cycling events that feature on the KZN cycling calendar, such as the Joburg2C, Sani2C, Berg2Bush, and PnP Amashova.

The business has grown from a sole proprietorship to a close corporation and employs 15 staff.

“Our staff have exceptional product and technical knowledge and are trained in computerised frame size assessment.

“Our bike technicians are highly experienced in repairs to various brands of bicycles. We take great pride in customer satisfaction and provide a service of incomparable standards.”

The company plans to reward customers during its centenary celebrations with specials on bicycles in December.

“The humble bicycle has evolved in many ways over the years,” says Padayachi. “Gone are the days of single-speed chunky bicycles. Today, lightweight titanium bicycles weighing a mere 7kg are all the rage, and dual suspension bicycles allow for a comfortable ride over rough terrain.”

Hattons Cycles also helps rural communities.

“Bicycles are an important mode of transport in rural communities and Hattons Cycles has partnered with many organisations to meet this need.”

The company’s reputation has helped it distinguish itself from its competitors.

“Hattons Cycles is well respected by the cycling fraternity and by fellow cycle dealers. We offer exceptional products at the best prices. We take pride in sameday repairs.”
