Medicine in his family’s blood
A GREAT support structure and passion for his chosen subjects saw Mohammed Bhorat secure 10 distinctions in his matric exams.
The Crawford College, La Lucia, pupil was the only one at his school to get so many distinctions.
He was also the only pupil to have done both the national senior certificate (NSC) mathematics and additional maths exams as well as the advanced mathematics programme on the Independent Examination Board (IEB) curriculum, for which he achieved a composite mark of 98 percent.
Now he plans to take his excellence and knowledge into the medical field and follow in the footsteps of his three sisters, who are studying to become doctors, and his father, a foetal maternal specialist, Ismail Bhorat.
“I really enjoyed my matric year and think that contributed to my success. I didn’t stress too much. Many people stress themselves out just by the thought of being in matric, but this was never the case for me.
“I loved what I did and I thoroughly enjoyed studying for my subjects. Matric can be the most exciting year of your schooling if you want it to be,” he said.
Bhorat said that leading a balanced life and prioritising were key to success.
He said he wanted to pursue a career in the medical field because he believed being a doctor was the most noble profession.
“The fact that I came from a background of doctors might have had some influence on my decision, but more important, I wanted to pursue a meaningful and fulfilling career.
“Being a doctor is one of the best careers for that objective. I’ve watched how my dad worked through the years and it was an influential factor.
“My mother is a pharmacist and both of them formed part of my support structure, along with friends,” he said.
Bhorat will study medicine at the University of KwaZuluNatal this year.
“I am excited and ready to start the next chapter in my life and look forward to what the future holds,” he said.
