College Rovers cruise to easy victory

- ISMAIL ADAM

COLLEGE Rovers heaped more pressure on title rivals Durban Collegians with a commanding 57-27 victory over Varsity College in the Fidelity Security Moor Cup on Friday night.

Try hat-tricks from Rovers’ inspirational captain Chris Jordaan and Calvin Adam, along with a brace from Tythan Adams sees Rovers top the Moor Cup standings on 23 points – extending their lead over second-placed Collegians to seven.

Rovers went into the match seeking to take maximum advantage over Collegians’ bye this weekend, and they responded. Jordaan and Adam got onto the try-scoring chart early on, which led to them holding a commanding 31-15 half-time lead.

A few yellow cards dished out to Rovers in the secondhalf did not stop their dominance. But it did allow Varsity College to score a few tries of their own. A brace from Ray

Williams and one each from Bennie Mashabane and Siphamandla Bingwa ensured the visitors walked away with a losing bonus point.

Following the ninth round of fixtures last weekend, the Moor Cup was split into a top and bottom five, with teams only carrying points gained against fellow teams in their conference.

Revised logs were done during the week, which now sees Rovers and Collegians involved in a two-horse race for the title.

Elsewhere, Jaguars sprung a surprise on Durban Crusaders with a convincing 48-15 victory in Durban North.

The victory for the Sydenham-based side now sees them head the bottom five conference on 19 points, followed by Crusaders on 16.
