Eagles grounded as Playas fluff out their feathers

- THAHIR ASMAL

DURBAN T20 Winter League newcomers, Team Playas, stunned the Isipingo Eagles in a lopsided final at the Siripat Road grounds in Reservoir Hills last weekend to claim the title.

With overhead conditions looking likely to suit the bowlers, the Eagles won the toss. From the get-go it looked like the right decision as Playas found themselves at 15 for 4 after just five overs, but that soon changed.

South Africa A and Sunfoil Dolphins man Keshav Maharaj stepped in and steadied the ship with a wellconstructed 41 from 33 balls.

Prenalen Subrayen also contributed with a telling 32 runs off 16 deliveries to help Playas set a target of 141.

Eagles never looked comfortable in the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals. Maharaj showed good temperament and used his off-spin to pick four wickets for 10 runs.

“The winners bagged R15 000. This has become an annual event on most cricketers’ calendars and next year we will have something new in store,” said tournament director Yahya Godil.
