South Africa 1 Lesotho 1 SA won on penalties TOKYO: Scotland ground out a 26-13 win over ill-disciplined Japan in Toyota City in the first match of their two-test series yesterday, reprising their triumph in last year’s World Cup.

The visitors scored two tries – one a penalty try and the other from prop WP Nel – and were reliant on the unerring goal-kicking boot of Greig Laidlaw, who made six out of six for 16 points.

The injury-hit home side showed bursts of attacking flair, but were left to rue a series of disciplinary lapses, which at one stage either side of half-time left them with 13 men, after two players were sent to the sin-bin.

The Scots had handed Japan their only loss in the pool stage of last year’s World Cup, leaving the hosts thirsting for revenge, and they started their mission promisingly.

Japan played without some World Cup stalwarts, like scrum-half Fumiaki Tanaka, loose forward Michael Leitch and full-back Ayumu Goromaru, all under contract with Super Rugby teams.

“We gave away too many penalties. It’s an area we will work to fix before we challenge Scotland again,” captain Shota Horie said after the match.

The Brave Blossoms will have to regroup for the deciding test at Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium next Saturday. – Reuters HARARE: Elton Chigumbura smashed an unbeaten 54 from 26 balls as Zimbabwe stunned India with a two-run win in the first Twenty20 International at the Harare Sports Club yesterday.

Chigumbura pummelled seven sixes as he took Zimbabwe to 170 for six in their 20 overs, having been sent into bat by the tourists.

India lost opener Lokesh Rahul on his Twenty20 debut to the first ball of their reply, but they went into the final over from seamer Neville Madziva needing eight to win.

That was reduced to four off the last ball with Mahendra Singh Dhoni on strike, but he could only bludgeon the ball to deep point and Zimbabwe celebrated a second consecutive victory over India in the 20-over format.

Aside from Chigumbura, Malcolm Waller (30 from 21 balls) and opener Hamilton Masakadza (25 from 15 balls) gave Zimbabwe their highest score against India in Twenty20 cricket.

India were behind the run-rate for much of their innings, but Manish Pandey (48 from 35 balls) kept them in the hunt until the last over.

With Dhoni on strike it looked like advantage to the tourists, but Madziva bowled a succession of excellent yorkers to limit India to five runs. – Reuters SOUTH Africa clinched the Spar Challenge international netball series by beating Wales 64-45 in the second Test at the Durban International Convention Centre yesterday afternoon.

The Proteas won the first Test 63-43 on Friday. The final Test will be played today.

Proteas coach Norma Plummer brought in Rochelle Lawson and Izette Lubbe to her starting seven. Both teams were more relaxed, and Wales put up a good fight in the third quarter, which South Africa won narrowly, 15 –14. – Sport reporter
