Kirpan in saucy video causes a stir
Call to not download Udta Punjab online
ROHIT Dhawan is back with his second directorial venture Dishoom, starring John Abraham and Varun Dhawan. The film has created quite a buzz since the release of the trailer. The teaser of the first song Sau Tarah Ke was released this week and caused a problem for the team.
Sau Tarah Ke features Abraham, Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez. In the teaser, Fernandez is wearing a short white dress and has a kirpan (a short, curved dagger) around her waist. The teaser has angered the Sikh community as a kirpan is one of the five compulsory kakaars worn by a practising Sikh. They believe the song is portraying a kirpan in an inappropriate manner and disrespecting it.
The Gurdwara Management Committee’s General Secretary, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, wrote an open letter to CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, asking him to remove the video. Sirsa has also asked for an apology from the Dishoom team.
His letter, posted on his Facebook page, said:
“The (video) depicts a semi-clad actress, Jacqueline Fernandez, dancing with a kirpan dangling in front of her legs and supported by a cloth belt worn around her waist. It made a mockery of the sacredness and respect of the religious symbols of kirpan.
“This act is clearly hurting the (feelings) of Sikhs as there have already been numerous complaints about this matter from various Sikh bodies. I request CBFC to instruct the director to immediately remove all the trailers/videos of this song uploaded on YouTube or other websites. Either delete the song from the movie or reshoot the video without the kirpan.
“Also please instruct the director and cast of the movie to make a public apology to the Sikh community for the deliberate insult to a respectable Sikh religious symbol.
If CBFC fails to take appropriate action in this context, DSGMC will be compelled to initiate criminal proceedings against the director and cast of Dishoom, as well as against the CBFC.”
Sau Tarah Ke was composed by Pritam and the video’s choreography done by Bosco Martis. Dishoom is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and set for release on July 29. – bollywood hungama.com two days ahead of its scheduled release in theatres. The Abhishek Chaubey directorial – which has been in news for the makers’ runin with the censor board – was available for illegal download. However, the links were soon “removed due to a copyright complaint”.
Bollywood celebrities including Karan Johar, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Sonakshi Sinha called on people to head to the theatres to watch the film, which is about drug abuse in the Indian state of Punjab.
