Indians are productive and industrious
EVERY so often someone in authority gets it in their head to pick on the Indian people – now it is about how we were not oppressed equally.
What is the point of meaningful discussion and acknowledgement of this fact?
Is it going to make those around Indian people more envious or resentful of our achievements?
Please could the esteemed professor (Bonke Dumisa) inform us as to who exactly he is referring to when he says “not all are well off without having worked hard”.
My personal interaction with relatives, friends and acquaintances of Indian descent indicates all have worked very hard.
Perhaps a study should be conducted on exactly who the professor is referring to.
Yes, we have enjoyed the fastest growth simply because Indian people make it happen. Indians in South Africa are a productive and industrious bunch. We work hard and have capitalised on opportunities created by government for the “black population”.
Those of us who are in the marketplace have two or three jobs (a job and a “sideline” as we Indians call it).
Yes, the prof says that we were not equally oppressed, but in the new dispensation we have received equal footing (Indian, coloured and African).
Indians have progressed in leaps and bounds because of determination and perseverance. Indians do not sit back and wait for the government to give us jobs. We open businesses and capitalise on what is out there. That is the key to our success and that is how we are today building a united and prosperous country. ANITHA SEWPARSAD Durban
