- ZIMASA MATIWANE

IN AN industry as fickle as entertainment, it is tricky to forge a lasting career, but Roshan Singh, a 32-yearold director and producer of local Bollywood musicals, has been at it for over decade. The entertainer, from Pinetown, told Tribune Herald about his journey and plans for the future.

How did you get into the entertainment industry?

I always had a passion for it. I started modelling for fashion shows and hair shows and then I won Mr Bollywood SA and from there I started doing my own shows.

This year marks 11 years since you started your career, has it been easy?

The entertainment industry is always changing, therefore I always have to keep on the look out for new trends and what people like. Creativity is my major strength.

I have a positive and humble attitude towards the work I do and the people I work with.

What are some of your career highlights so far?

When I entered the entertainment industry I had the opportunity to go for a screen test in India which I will never forget. It was one of the best experiences in my life. Another highlight is working with youth and women empowerment.

Since Durban is so diverse, I explore the richness of different cultures using them on stage. I love giving back to charity by having drives, feeding schemes and working with underprivileged kids and disabled people.

Have you had any Bollywood encounters?

Yes, plenty. I was invited for red carpet treatment at the South African Indian Film and Television Awards (Saiftas) in Durban in 2013. To name a few Bollywood encounters, Madhuri Dixiit, Siddhart Malhotra, Sunil Shetty, Dia Mizra, Ranveer Singh. I also brought down Zee TV stars for my musical shows.

Who do you look up to?

My parents because they have instilled in me good morals and values, which make me the person I am today.

What do you do in your spare time?

There is not much, especially being in the entertainment industry, since you always have to be on your toes. But when I do get time, I like to experiment with different types of food dishes since I’m a qualified chef.

What is your mantra?

Always keep a positive mind and plan for the future.
