Have a whale of a time at dockside expo
CRAFTING marine-themed Christmas gifts, including fridge magnets and charm bracelets in aid of deep sea research, forms part of a dockside expo in the Durban harbour today.
Foundation phase teacher Katie Muller is running the children’s stand at Sea Quests’ Ocean Research and Conservation Day.
The mini-expo includes open access to the renowned research vessel, the RV Angra Pequena, a 21m yacht which supports oceanographic research, training and conservation expeditions.
“I have had the privilege to take a trip on the Angra. It is such a special vessel for education, opening the door for young students to get out into the ocean and discover what is out there,” said Muller.
Today’s event aims to raise awareness of latest discoveries in marine science and the Blue Fund’s Ocean Stewards programme which enables marine science students countrywide to take part in research expeditions on board the Angra Pequena.
Underwater video footage and photos of rare sea life discovered during these expeditions will be showcased, alongside educational exhibits and activities organised by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Southern Africa, the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme, the University of KZN and the Clean Durban team.
Wildlands will also be promoting its WhaleTime project which monitors and researches the migration of whales along the KwaZuluNatal coast.
Visitors to the Angra Pequena will have the opportunity to book on next week’s Whale Time tours which get under way at the Maritime Museum tomorrow. To book on a tour call Bongiwe Mthethwa at 071 004 7119. – Roving Reporters
