Sundowns sink Stars

- MOHAU RAMASHIDJA

FOR Sundowns supporters who came to watch their team play their last game in the domestic scene before jetting off to Japan tomorrow for the upcoming Fifa Club World Cup, the 4-1 scoreline over Free State Stars was a perfect ‘goodbye’ for them.

Sundowns dominated from the start.

In the 33rd minute, Keagan Dolly initiated a run from his own half, making his way to the opposition’s 18-yard box. He and Khama Billiat combined well and broke down their opponents’ defensive wall.

Although they did that extremely well, they couldn’t finish the chance off. Billiat’s shot was deflected back into play in the path of Leonardo Castro, who missed. But Sundowns’ did not lose heart and pressed forward.

Just three minutes before the break Castro laid it on for Billiat, when he could have taken a shot himself. The Zimbabwe international sent the ball straight into the back of the net give his side the lead.

But the lead was shortlived as Ea Lla Koto pushed for an equaliser a few minutes before the break. Thokozani Sekotlong scored it with his superb finish inside the 18-yard box.

In the second period, Sundowns continued with where they left off in the first. Just a few minutes after the restart, Tau scored Sundowns’ second of the match.

The 22-year attacking midfielder was unmarked as he made his way into the 18-yard area in anticipation Tebogo Langerman’s cross.

And when it came, Tau leaped to beat opposition’s ‘keeper with a superb header to give his side the lead.

Just as Stars were licking their wounds from conceding their second goal of the afternoon, Dolly pounced on the opportunity as he scored Sundown’s third of the encounter, following brilliant combination play between him and Castro inside the area.

Tau wrapped things up with a solo effort from the halfway line to beat Thela Ngobeni, who lacked the required composure to make the needed save.

YESTERDAY Kaizer Chiefs endured another torrid evening. A brace from Lerato Manzini and one goal from Tshwarelo Bereng ensured Chippa United downed Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, despite scoring first through Siphiwe Tshabalala.
