US BRANDS OWNER, Dunkin’ Brands on Friday opened its first store Baskin-Robbins in Cape Town, in Canal Walk.

This follows a successful launch of its Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in October and November. It launched its first restaurant in Cape Town following an agreement with Grand Parade Investment (GPI) in January, this year, which will see GPI opening more than 250 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants and more than 70 Baskin-Robbins stores in South Africa over the next 10 years.

GPI had invested about R210 million in the deal to bring Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins to South Africa. The deal will also see Dunkin’ Brands expanding to Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Mauritius.

Sean Dearham, the chief operating officer of Baskin-Robbins said the Baskin-Robbins brand would be different from other ice cream stores with variety of flavours.

“With a library of over 1 300 different flavours to choose from, our brand is able to differentiate itself from competitors. Baskin-Robbins is best known globally for its 31 flavours – a different flavour for each day of the month”, he said.

“South Africans can always look forward to something exciting at our ice cream shops and with the help of our famous “Pink Spoon”, guests can sample all 31 flavours until they find the flavour that makes them happiest”, Dearham said.

He said South Africa would become the 51st country to join Baskin-Robbins under Grand Foods, the subsidiary of GPI. “We will continue to drive the key brand value of remaining a neighbourhood-focused ice cream shop.”

Alan Keet, the chief executive of Grand Foods, said the company remained focused in satisfying South Africans.

“Baskin-Robbins is a premium brand that offers something unique to customers, but more importantly offers locals a variety of different flavours and product innovations that are ahead of the trend curve. There is also a retail business would be a key focus the brand and is set to rollout in 2017”, he said.
