UKZN on winning streak as Crusaders crumble

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal are the early front-runners in the KZNCU Premier League. They beat defending champions Crusaders by four wickets last weekend to maintain their undefeated start to the season.

Riaan Minnie (87) was the Crusaders stand-out batsman as they crumbled for a paltry 154 all out.

Hollywoodb­ets Dolphins youngster Senuran Muthusamy, Gavin Reddy and Wade Canham claimed three wickets apiece.

In response, recently appointed KZN Under-19 captain Joel Veeran (38) and Cameron Gordon (39) put together a solid partnershi­p to guide UKZN to victory.

Clares registered a comprehens­ive eight-wicket win over Berea Rovers.

Kyle Moolman (31) top-scored for Rovers as they set a meagre target of 141. Gareth Roderick and Dolphins big hitter Vaughn van Jaarsveld both scored centuries as Clares won at a canter.

In the closest game of the weekend, uThungulu edged Chatsworth Sporting by 13 runs. uThungulu set a target of 188, with Ruan van Rensburg making 42. Theesan Naicker was great with ball in hand, claiming 4/32 from 7 overs. Naicker (39) and Aaron Paul (39) troubled the scorers, but in the end Sporting were bowled out for 175.

Delta put in a clinical display to beat African Warriors by 8 wickets. They amassed 225, batting first, with Matthew Montgomery (68) the pick of their batsman. Warriors were then bowled out for a disappoint­ing 99.

In the final game of the round, Pinetown beat Topham by a mammoth 128 runs. After putting on a total of 232, they bundled out the Chatsworth side for just 104.
