Gas affects pupils
NEW DELHI: Thirty pupils at an Indian school were taken to hospital yesterday complaining of breathlessness and eye irritation, reportedly after a gas leak from a fuel tanker.
More than 100 pupils were evacuated from the Rani Jhansi school in the capital New Delhi, media said. It wasn’t clear what had caused the leak.
“Some students complained of irritation in the eyes and throat, due to the gas leak,” a school official said. – Reuters
Texas cop arrested
AUSTIN: A white Texas police officer turned himself in on Friday to face a charge of murder in the death of a black 15-year-old boy, who was in a car moving away from the officer when the policeman opened fire.
Roy Oliver, 37, turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson, Melinda Urbina, said.
Oliver was fired earlier this week for policy violations. – Reuters
Protester killed
CARACAS: A 20-year-old Venezuelan protester died on Friday after being shot in the head, authorities said, taking fatalities from a month of anti-government unrest to at least 37 as the opposition geared up for more demonstrations.
Hecder Lugo was hurt during fighting between demonstrators and security forces in Valencia on Thursday that also injured four others, the local opposition Mayor Enzo Scarano said. – Reuters
Pirates caught
BOSASSO: A Chinese navy ship handed over three suspected pirates to Somali authorities on Friday.
The pirates were involved in an attempted hijacking in April of the OS35, a Tuvaluflagged cargo ship rescued by the Chinese navy after the crew sent a distress call.
The pirates handed to the Puntland authorities included a local leader known as Aw Kombe. Attacks fell sharply after ship owners tightened security but they have risen again this year. – Sputnik
‘Bid to kill Kim’
BEIJING: North Korea has accused the US and South Korean intelligence agencies of plotting to kill the nation’s leader Kim Jong-un, using “biochemical substances”.
This comes amid rising tension over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes and days before a presidential election in South Korea. – The Washington Post
