Palestinians need our support

THERE are 5 million Palestinian refugees being denied their right of return to their historic lands, as well as any form of compensation for the land stolen from them.

A third of them live in impoverished refugee camps, without access to basic necessities.

There are the 2.7 million Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and 1.8 million in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza has been described as an “open-air prison” and 40% of the West Bank has been claimed for illegal Israeli settlements.

There are the 1.4 million Palestinian citizens of Israel, systematically oppressed by virtue of not being Jewish.

Fifty laws in Israel discriminate against Palestinian citizens, or, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likes to call them, a “demographic problem.”

If we stand up against other types of oppression, we shouldn’t let Palestine be the exception. RIYAAD DHAI
