‘One, two, Freddy’s coming for you …’

- ASHWEN SINGH

IN MY mind, the VW Citi Golf remains the veritable “Ferrari” of the South African working class.

The car continues to defy the norms of traditional aesthetics and technological appropriateness.

The Citi Golf epitomises the Volkswagen ideology of building “people’s cars” for individuals who are passionate about driving rather than just travelling from one point to the next.

So the car remains one of the most regularly featured vehicles in this column. This is in no small part owed to the vehicle’s virtually limitless scalability thanks to an extensive range of available aftermarket performance permutations.

This week we feature a Golf named Freddy, owned by 22-year-old car dealer senior salesman, Phoenix resident and drag racing enthusiast Shaldon Samuel.

The Golf got its name from the horror movie franchise Nightmare on Elm Street’s dream villain Freddy Krueger.

The name was specially coined from the famous rhyme in the movie “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…” – befitting Samuel’s super-quick, upgraded Volkswagen Velociti’s ability to “catch up” with most cars ahead of him.

Mechanically, Samuel’s car boasts a host of performance upgrades including a two-litre, eight-valve power plant replacing the car’s original 1.6litre factory fitted unit.

His car further features an MP9 fuel injection system, K&N performance air filter, VR6 injectors, a 288 Estas cam, a forged crank, gas flowed and ported valves, all mated to a copper clutch.

The exterior, interior and suspension were kept deceptively standard, so it does not in any way hint at the car’s seriously enhanced performance.

Few VW Golfs are ever complete without a thumping sound system. This one is no exception. It has an acoustic complement that includes a Dixon head unit, Pioneer super tweeters, Pioneer 6x9s and an Audiogods 1600W two-channel amplifier.

Samuel belongs to the Street Outlaws local car club.

It was not disclosed how much money was spent on this build. SERVICE PROVIDER:
