Berea bleats at sheep for sale

-

THE CITY law enforcement and health department swiftly responded to a disregard of the by-laws when a Berea resident reported that more than 60 sheep were being kept in a yard in their neighbourhood.

It was believed the sheep were being sold from the property, at the corner of Holstead Gardens and Catterick Road, for use in an upcoming religious, cultural festival or ceremony.

DA ward councillor Martin Meyer said he was alerted by the concerned residents about the sheep and has since raised it with the relevant authorities. “I encourage residents to get to know their neighbours. Ask about their beliefs and customs and, very importantly, let’s respect each other while also respecting and following the laws of our country and city,” he said.

The issue caused outraged residents to vent with posts on Facebook.

Wesley HR wrote: “Yeah! well, the bottom line is very simple; this is a residential area, not farmland or commercial land. Religious purposes do not circumvent our laws and by-laws, I’m afraid to say. If it were one or two animals, I’m sure most people wouldn’t mind, but this isn’t on.”

Another resident, Annamarie D’unienville, said: “I find it shocking to see this in a built-up area; there are surely places these animals can be legitimately purchased that are licensed to keep them in more humane conditions.”

The homeowner could not be reached for comment.
