The new funny boys on the block

IMRLTY team use comedy to keep out of trouble

- KARINDA JAGMOHAN

WITH over 70 000 views and counting, online videos by a group of Durban boys are going viral. IMRLTY (immorality) is the nowtrending Facebook page of upcoming entertainment sensations and high school friends who made “funny” their business. The recent video about asking mom to go to an Ultra Music Festival has been shared over 1 000 times with hundreds of young Durbanites tagging their friends and virtually laughing out loud at the familiarity.

Ultra is an annual outdoor electronic music festival that takes place during March in the city of Miami, Florida. The group’s Yashlyn Moodley, 19, spoke to the Sunday Tribune Herald, describing how the Ultra video set the bar for the team. “We posted the video from salvaged footage and following the amazing response we now know we can’t go back to just posting soccer and gaming videos,” he said.

In a Facebook post, the young men said: “While some teens find themselves getting intoxicated on Friday nights, we decided to make funny videos and try and ease the tension.” The group of five have their management layout in order.

Moodley describes himself as the morale booster. The commander-in-chief is Treolin Lance, 19, who takes care of matters behind-thescenes, from scriptwriting to editing, along with Shandalin Subramoney, 22, who is described as a crucial component to the team’s success. Delaren Subramoney, 19, and Reisen Naiker, 20, are often in the spotlight with a thirst for entertaining.

IMRLTY began a year ago as an idea that sprung to life one Saturday evening. Moodley said: “We decided to do something out of the ordinary, spontaneously recorded on our phones, and later on decided to start a Youtube channel and Facebook page.”

After that initial foray, the group has enjoy good success with each creative piece and now post videos that poke fun at the everyday life of South African Indians. New to the media industry, the group have faced a host of challenges, including co-operation, weighing creative differences and a lashing from critics. The team appreciated the support they received from IMRLTY’S audience, which “keeps our spirits high”, and have learnt to take criticism.

“Be consistent,” Moodley advised aspirant entertainers. “When venturing into this form of entertainment, you should never make financial rewards your focus. We post videos that are appealing to audiences, so as our viewer count increases, acquiring sponsorship is easier,” he added.

The boys remained tightlipped about who played “mother” and they’re hoping to make further and greater inroads into the media world.
