My Durban with... Mfundo Ndovela

He’s a private citizen by day and a comedian at night. Mfundo Ndovela is one of the comedians to watch in Durban. Buhle Mbonambi asked him to share his favourite things about Durban

WHAT’S the first thing you do when you arrive in Durban from out of town? I freshen up and go perform if I’m booked for a comedy gig or watch some standup comedy if I am not on the bill for the night.

Best meal you’ve had in Durban that’s not at home? I’m a fan of curry, so it is a bunny chow.

What current local song can’t you stop listening to? AKA & Anatii – Don’t Forget To Pray.

What’s the last South African movie you watched? Kalushi.

Earliest memory you have of Durban? When I was studying at DUT from 2007, from my lecture venue I could see when the guys were building the Moses Mabhida Stadium and that was awesome to see such a project from scratch.

So, if you were mayor for the day, what would you do?

I would ban horse-and-trailer trucks during peak hours. I would also allocate street kids to the relevant facilities whether they like it or not, for them to get the necessary education.

They can call me Robert Mugabe jr for all I care.

Your favourite hangout spot in Durban? Wahooz on the Promenade. It is a cool spot, especially on a Sunday (pictured).

The best kept secret in the city? People need to pay great attention to the comedy scene.

Best place for a first date in the city: Vigour & Verve (Elangeni and Maharani, North Beach) of talent in all genres of art. A lot of people in show business are usually from Durban. I always say we can build something good right here but we just need the necessary support and platform.

Who do you call when you want to have fun and where in the city do you go? I call my brother Ayanda and we do Bagders in Glenwood and Max’s be locked in overnight? Piatto restaurant in ushaka Marine. I would finish those people’s food; it’s so appetising. I expect a free meal from Piatto for the free advertising.

What’s the one thing people need to stop doing in Durban? People need to start supporting comedy shows. So many people need comedy in their lives, they just have not realised it as yet. People can pay more than R700 to see international acts that were at their peak in the 90s, but fail to come watch local guys making an impact in 2017 for only R100. It doesn’t make sense to me. Those international guys are here to collect their retirement fund from you, my good people.

Where is the best view of Durban? There are two actually. When you are close to St Augustine’s or Entabeni Hospital at the hill, you get a nice view from there, as well as Currie Road going towards Morningside.

Best place for a nightcap? California Dreaming in North Beach.

What’s the one thing that differentiates Durban from other cities in SA? The structure of and the maintenance of the city.

Where would you suggest first time visitors to the city go, to get the best experience of the city? Any place close to the beach or umhlanga.

So what do you do on a Sunday morning? Preferably take a walk at the beach. If not, then I catch up on current affairs.
