Monumentally insulting

-

“WHERE’S our statue and the money?” screamed the headline in the Sunday Tribune Herald.

I am sure, Nabeelah Shaik, that next time this year we will be in much the same position if the present members do not step aside.

This delay is typical of our leaders, who are all talk and no action, but it’s sad to see the disrespect shown to our forefathers, who toiled selflessly and with their meagre earnings were able to not only educate us but also built schools and hospitals for the benefit of our community.

If this monument is not put up, it will amount to an obliteration of our history as generations go by, less and less appreciative of what was done for our community.

This would stand as a monumental edifice of the sacrifices made by our forbears but, sadly, some of the leaders of today lack the drive, vision and sense of passion that dwelled in our elders.

Perhaps the time has arrived for those who are present members to step aside and provide others with the opportunity.

I humbly suggest Ashwin Desai, Yogin Devan, Ronnie Govender, Judge Thumba Pillay and MEC Ravi Pillay, among others, who would see this task to fruition so that the community and our future generation will benefit. To the present members, I say if what you did yesterday still looks good, you haven’t done enough today.
