stop and people would ask where they could acquire one or if I offered lessons,” he said.

The Drumshack Experience was born out of a love for music and rhythm.

“The fulfilment I personally experienced makes me believe in what I am doing and enables me to continue on this path regardless of the circumstances,” said Pimenta.

He finds music uplifting and believes he is fortunate to be in a position to share this with the multitudes who have never had this experience. He said it was lifechanging.

Finding a suitable place for the Drumshack to start operating and in which to teach drumming was a challenge because of the noise factor.

“Other challenges included creating awareness of our location and trying to earn a living from a passion and love of handdrumming,” said Pimenta.

He said a belief in the value of uniting families and communities through music motivated him to continue.

“I believe in the intrinsic personal growth opportunities for individuals to express themselves non-verbally through rhythm by releasing tensions or underlying frustration and anger through drumming.”

When it comes to the material used for the Drumshack, Pimenta and Roderick upcycle, recycle and use timber from invasive trees that are felled locally or find timber that has fallen naturally and use it to make their drums.

Their business is aimed at all ages. “Music is beneficial to everyone and our aim is to empower anyone to become an instant musician,” said Pimenta.

They charge R150 for an hour lesson.

Drum prices range from R650 to R1 800. Repairs and reskinning of drums cost an average of R650.
