Space for fine art, good food and all that jazz

- SIPHELELE BUTHELEZI

WHAT do you get when you mix rhythmic jazz blues, the visual arts and artisanal food? Jazz Xpression, of course. Organiser Dumisani Ginindza says the event will provide a space where jazz-loving, culinary-loving and artsloving Durbanites can come together and celebrate their diversity of interests.

“Arts as a strong medium requires deep and spiritual commitment for citizens to realise it is a resource to change embedded perceptions about one another,” he says.

“Jazz Xpression positions itself as the indigenous knowledge management centre where dignity and pride of art is preserved.”

Ginindza, who has been working tirelessly to put the event together, says fine music, fine art and fine dining will be on offer.

Performers will include internationally renowned pianist Andile Yenana, who will be on the keys with his famous renditions such as The People.

Also on keys, will be newcomer and music student Obakeng Thamage, who is a second-year University of Kwazulu-natal student. Guitarist Dimitri Barry will be among the other performers in the line-up.

Ginindza says chef Fred van Blerk and a team of young chefs will share a threecourse culinary experience. “The transfer of skills to the younger generation is our key priority,” he says.

Although Cape Town and Joburg are miles ahead of Durban when it comes to lifestyle entertainment, Durban also has potential to grow with its own signature jazz events., he says.

“Jazz in particular matures with time through associations of like-minded people beyond colour and creed converging on particular spaces for entertainment and that is what Jazz Xpression is about.

“All our arts activations and artworks have to represent social cohesion, which ties in well with this year’s Nelson Mandela centenary celebration,” he says.

Dumisani Ginindza, the event organiser for Jazz Xpression, says the event is a space where jazz, art and food lovers can come together. (ANA)
