Exciting three-horse race for premier league title

- THAHIR ASMAL

THE KWAZULU-NATAL Cricket Union Premier League reaches its penultimate round of matches today with an exciting three-horse race for the title.

Clares have enjoyed some encouraging results in recent weeks and have shot up to third, just two points behind Chatsworth Sporting in second.

Crusaders lead the way, but with just a six-point buffer between them and Sporting, they have to win their last two games to ensure they successfully defend their title.

Clares registered a comfortable six-wicket win over Berea Rovers last weekend.

Batting first, Rovers could amass only a total of 106, with Ryan Reeves claiming figures of three for 11 from his six overs.

In response, Imran Qadir scored an elegant 50, while Hollywoodbets Dolphins star Senuran Muthusamy compiled an unbeaten 38 to see them over the line.

Sporting returned to winning ways after their loss to Clares the previous week with an eight-wicket triumph over Delta.

Only Nazeer Jaffer (31) got going for Delta, whose top order was crushed by a ruthless spell of bowling by Jesse Smit (4/13). Their total of 91 was chased down with ease by Sporting with Matthew Crampton (42) topscoring for the Chatsworth team.

Elsewhere, Crusaders thrashed

King Cetshwayo by nine wickets, while Pinetown beat a relegation-bound Topham.

DHS Rhythm enjoyed a rare good weekend out against a UKZN team that have also struggled this season.

Despite the win, they are 14 points behind the University outfit and remain on course to drop down to the Challenge League along with Topham.
