ONE of South Africa’s richest women, Wendy Appelbaum, discussed how she started her own wine business as a result of her boardroom experience­s. She was speaking on CNN Marketplac­e Africa’s Profit Point.

She started her business, De Morgenzon, a wine business that was unlike anything she had done before. She shares her story below.

I really did understand how to run a business and make money. A lot of people say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, which to a degree I was. But I’ve certainly not relied on that to get on with my own business life and do what I wanted to do. boardroom that good.

Gosh, at one point I think

I sat on 15 boards. And once I realised that all this experience I was getting across the board, from financials to marketing, HR to all the things that you learn as a member of a board, at that point I decided I was going to do it for myself. That was when we started De Morgenzon.

I have a wonderful winemaker whose talent is to make wine. I think as a business woman, it was something I would love. I always wanted to farm. I always wanted to live in nature. And this gave me that opportunit­y to do something. wine you’ve ever made.’ And he did that.
