- HERALD REPORTER

A DURBAN DJ’S dream of his own show on one of South Africa’s biggest radio stations has been realised.

Ryan Nair, 31, prominently known by his stage name, Ryan the DJ, announced on social media that he had secured a slot on 5FM to present a show every Saturday between 7pm and 10pm.

Nair, of Newlands West, started as a DJ when he was 16 years old.

He obtained a degree in marketing, but his passion for music led him to pursue a full-time career behind the microphone.

Nair has participated in several DJ competitions, earning national and international acclaim.

His accolades included winning East Coast Radio and MTN battle of the DJS competition. That secured him a slot on East Coast Radio’s Late Night Vibe show with Trevor Williams and Sekza. In 2012, Nair was crowned 5FM Ultimix at 6 DJ competition winner. He has since had associations with the station.

Last year, he won the Red Bull 3Style South African final. That saw him go to Poland to compete in the world final and he placed in the top six.

“Having my own show is a big deal and amazing news for me. It has been well received by all my fans, who responded to the news with excitement on social media. It’s something I have long worked towards,” said Nair.

He said he hoped to use the platform to inspire other emerging DJS and give them a chance to show off their talent.

“The 5FM slot will be an open genre show and will accommodate all music tastes, and listeners who just want to have a good time partying on a Saturday night.

“It’s something I am looking forward to. Listeners can expect the best music from local talent as well as sounds from DJS around the world,” said Nair.
