Essence of Easter with Bollywood twist
The Durban Christan Centre’s traditional Passion Play promises to be the perfect Easter outing for the entire family, with a Bollywood inspiration
SOME Bollywood flair will be thrown into the mix when the Durban Christian Centre stages its traditional “Passion Play” at the Jesus Dome over the coming Easter weekend, an event that is usually well attended.
This year’s Bollywoodinspired passion play has been themed “Once and For All” and set to feature a cast of over 100. It swings into action nightly from March 29 to
April 1.
The Durban Christian Centre has earmarked proceeds from the ticket sales for the production for a new church building.
The cast have been rehearsing for several months in workshops directed by Rajesh Gopie, a prominent Durban actor who featured in last year’s blockbuster local movie, Keeping Up With The Kandasamys. “The play epitomises the very essence of Easter,” said Durban Christian Centre spokesperson, Ron Steel.
“Durban has the largest number of Indian people outside of India, and to celebrate that we’ve chosen to add a Bollywood twist to our live Easter production,” he said. Steele said the story is based of the traditional Passion Play which depicts Jesus Christ’s trial, suffering and death.
The story revolves around three local families and their pursuit in overcoming several struggles. Their journey is filled with music and dance, and the characters are decorated with colourful costumes. Some of the Bollywood movie songs set to be featured are Dola Dola and Balle Balle from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Pride and Prejudice.
“It’s the perfect Easter outing for the entire family,” Steele said. Tickets cost R50. To book tickets contact the Durban Christian Centre on 031 242 5000.
