Weather fails to dull Easter festive spirit

- NABEELAH SHAIKH

DESPITE the gloomy weather, Durban was abuzz with activity this weekend as locals and holidaymakers came out to enjoy the festivities on offer.

Two big Easter egg hunts, one at ushaka Marine World and the other at the Durban Botanic Gardens, attracted hundreds of enthusiastic children and parents.

Children put on their bunny ears, colourful tutus and embraced the festivities, which included live entertainment, stilt walkers, jugglers and animated characters.

Some of the fun activities the kids lapped up were sand art, musical chairs, sack races and egg and spoon races.

At the ushaka Marine World children received free goodie bags and over 100 000 marshmallow eggs were distributed. One Johannesburg holidaymaker spotted at ushaka, Ronesh Govender, said Durban was the “place to be”.

“The atmosphere here is amazing and the children are loving it,” said Govender.

Both venues have Easter egg hunts scheduled for today.

On Friday, Durban saw the start of the annual Hare Krishna Festival of Chariots.

The occasion drew hundreds of devotees who took to the streets for a float procession along the beachfront.

The three-day festival ends tomorrow.

Friday also saw a special Good Friday service and silent march through the city organised by the Diakonia Council of Churches.

The event attracted Christians and a number of politicians who embraced the religious event.
