Life balance – little of this, a little of that workshop

- KARINDA JAGMOHAN

THE power of a man lies within the power of his mind, according to Indian spiritual leader Mahatria Ra, who is expected to share his knowledge of self-improvement with Durban this month.

A two-day retreat peppered with motivational workshops and “forward-thinking” conversations has been planned for the Royal Hotel on April 21 and 22.

Mahatria is the founder of Infinitheism, a tool to help practice one’s own religion in the modern world, and a learning path for those who seek to better themselves.

“Infinitheism is a group of people who have unflinching faith in an infinite cosmic presence. Everything has either evolved or at least everything has changed. Religion alone hasn’t. True, in its essence, religion cannot evolve, but it must evolve in its expressions and in its practices. Yesterday’s ways don’t work with today’s mind,” Mahatria said.

The 52-year-old was born in Chennai, India, as TT Rangarajan, and worked as a software engineer years, before launching his own company.

However, the news that a close friend committed suicide saw Rangarajan crumble. He sought answers to his questions about life and death, and his research ultimately led him to forming a spiritual organisation “Alma Mater” in 1995, which later became Infinitheism, a space to practice self-development.

Mahatria has since gained followers across the world through its simple messages on of self-control and examples of how it could be achieved.

According to Mahatria, overcoming laziness means teaching the mind to want something more than just sleep itself.

“We want to sleep because it’s pleasure for us, but when we have to wake early because we have to pick up our best friend from the airport then we become so excited we wake up hours before our alarm. We need to train our minds to seek pleasure in something other than sleeping in, so we are urged to wake up in the morning.”

Mahatria’s workshops in Durban are expected to revolve around his premise of “This and That”, balancing paradoxes in life. Tickets for the retreat cost R2 000 each, which includes refreshments and lunch. For more info and ticket registration visit www.hdb.org. za or e-mail Henry Reddy at info@hdb.org.za
