Netball season starts with a showdown of note

THE Chatsworth netball courts were abuzz with activity last weekend as the 2018 season got under way.

In an effort to mobilise teams, rid players of the early season lethargy and promote the sport all at one go, the Chatsworth Netball Union (CNU) hosted a knock-out tournament.

The competition is split into two streams, one solely for Cnu-registered teams and one for social teams.

In the CNU stream, Woodhurst and Montford impressed in the round robin stages. They progressed as the top sides, undefeated from their respective groups and into the final.

Amid sweltering conditions, both teams put on a thrilling show for the spectators and traded goal-for-goal, with Woodhurst eventually emerging victorious by a narrow 5-4 scoreline in the competition sponsored by the Chatsworth Motor Club.

Seasoned campaigners Demat Daredevils took on surprise package Protea High School in the final of the social category. In the end, the stage was too big for the tournament debutantes (Protea High) and they went down 6-0 in the deciding game.

“Both finals were enjoyable,” said CNU spokesperson Lully Chetty. “It was nice to watch teams playing at a good level so early in the season. We were impressed by the girls from Protea, who didn’t have much experience at this level.

“This was more of a development tournament for us. We want to raise awareness on leagues in Chatsworth. This was a chance for teams to see what we are about.”

The CNU is now ready to roll out their league campaign with a senior open tournament set for April 15.

“This is one of the most competitive leagues in the province,” Chetty said. “Junior and senior tournaments are tightly contested throughout the year.

“We’re anticipating a good number of teams will register for the new season. We are open for registration every Tuesday from 6 to 7pm. We encourage those who want to get involved in the sport to sign up.”
