Women in black and ‘doeks’ honour mawinnie in style

- TRIBUNE REPORTER

HUNDREDS of women heeded calls to celebrate the fallen activist Winnie Madikizelamandela by wearing all-black outfits and doeks on Friday.

Social media was overflowing with posts from the rich and famous to ordinary women, featuring women in black attire, with some raising their fists in honour of Madikizela-mandela.

News of her death had led to ugly scenes on social media earlier in the week, with many accused of insulting her as debates flared about her legacy. Among those who were singled out was former president Thabo Mbeki. He was accused of giving an improper account of Madikizela-mandela in interviews to ENCA and the SABC.

The ANC on Wednesday challenged women to dress in black and wear doeks to honour the 81-year-old: #Allblackwithadoek and #Ripwinniemadikizelamandela trended on Friday.

Among those who shared photos of themselves was TV personality Boity Thulo, who wore black jeans, a black top, a black coat and a colourful doek – and her Instagram post amassed more than 20 000 likes.

Another media personality, Bonang Matheba, also in black with a colourful doek, wrote “For mama,” her post featuring a fist emoji.

Former Miss SA Bokang Montjane-tshabalala said: “She didn’t die she multiplied!

“Say hi to Peter Mokaba, Mama Lillian Ngoyi, Chris Hani and Steve Biko.

“Tell them their deaths and sacrifice were not in vain, Rea leboga (thank you). Viva Mama Winnie Viva! Amandla!”

The cast of Isidingo also paid tribute to Madikizela-mandela.
