Talk of hit in death of Durban lawyer

- NABEELAH SHAIKH

POLICE are investigating the possibility that a hit could have been placed on a Durban lawyer who was killed outside his La Lucia home on Thursday night.

Thamsanqa Wilson Ndwawande, 46, was shot eight times while in his vehicle.

He died at the scene. While police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the motive for his killing was unknown and no arrests had been made, a police source with knowledge of the investigation said the possibility of a hit was being looked at.

There is also speculation on social media that the incident was a hit.

The father of three, who was originally from Nongoma, north-west KZN, was believed to deal mainly with Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims.

He is listed as a director of three companies, including Ndwandwe and Associates, Sheer Destiny, and Thamzwi Trading Enterprise.

Attempts to contact his family yesterday were unsuccessful, but the Sunday Tribune’s sister newspaper, the Independent on Saturday, reported that a source close to the family confirmed that Ndwanade had just returned home on Thursday around 7.30pm and was about to pass through the gate when the shots rang out.

Ndwandwe tried to reverse his vehicle in an attempt to escape and pulled off on his neighbour’s driveway.

The neighbour, who asked not to be named said she heard the gunshots, saw the car on her driveway and alerted Marshall Security to the incident.

They arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.

“We didn’t know the deceased very well. We heard the gunshots and the car was on the driveway so my husband ran outside to see what was going on and we then alerted the security company,” said the neighbour.

Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen confirmed it had responded to the scene.

“On arrival at the scene, a 46-year-old male was found seated in a SUV having suffered wounds.

“Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do to assist the man and he was declared deceased.

“The scene was secured and handed over to the SAPS,” said Van Reenen. multiple gunshot
