IT HAS been 125 years since Mahatma Gandhi arrived in South Africa, and the changes over the years are likely to come under the spotlight at the 10th annual Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
The public event, hosted by the Gandhi Development Trust and DUT Journalism, is at the Arthur Smith Hall, DUT City campus on April 11.
This year also marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO, Sello
Hatang, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, said the lecture was one of the premier events on the calendar for the Gandhi Development Trust.
“We are privileged to have Sello Hatang to speak,” she said.
Also on the programme is a tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela-mandela.
Durban film-maker Anant Singh will screen the Mother of the Nation documentary to honour Madikizela-mandela.
“We could not but seize on the opportunity to also pay tribute to Comrade Winnie,” said Gandhi.
The Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture was launched in 2008 by then minister of posts, telecommunications and broadcasting, Jay Naidoo.
Keynote speakers through the years have included Delhibased author, advocate Anil Nauriya; Africa Programme co-ordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, Angela Quintal; and the former director of operations at the Mapungubwe Institute, Dr Yacoob Abba Omar.
Advocate Robin Sewlal, associate director for journalism at DUT, said each year the lecture generated new ways of thinking about the media industry.
“The calibre of speakers we’ve attracted has given audiences richer and deeper insights,” he said.
