Sound, seduction and custom induction
THE VW Golf could be considered a veritable “Lego” for petrol-heads as it offers virtually countless permutations of scalability options, for performance and stance builds alike.
This week we feature one of my personal favourites in the realm of aged German beauties, a classic Volkswagen Golf Mk1 owned by retail employee Keshin Pillay, a 24-year-old Phoenix resident and car fanatic with a particular interest in car modification.
Pillay’s car is far from standard. It has a retrofitted two-litre, eightvalve power plant mated to a gasflowed cylinder head and intake with upgraded injectors and valves.
The set-up includes modified 48mm throttles, Caravelle 2.3L pistons, a 298-degree cam, a Dicktator 60-2 Wasted Spark management system with “launch control”, a custom-installed branch with a 63mm performance exhaust, as well as a “tricked out” gearbox to handle the extra power.
The exterior features an awesome customised pearl paint job, a pair of “gilled” fibreglass fenders and a lowered suspension system with uprated stabiliser bars and upgraded ventilated brake disks.
A set of 14-inch Omega mag wheels were also fitted to this ride.
A “Velociti” spec interior upgrade, except for the dash and wood-grain steering wheel installation, green footwell lighting and a host of performance gauges complete the inside of this MK1.
They say no Golf is complete without a killer sound installation. This is no exception. It rocks with a Sony Xplode head unit, Rockford six-inch split system, pair of super tweeters in the front and Kenwood 7x10-inch speakers in the rear. The boot houses a 10-inch BM subwoofer and two Baby Brat series amplifiers.
It was not disclosed how much was spent on this build.
