Volleyball competition ready to spring into action

KWAZULU-NATAL’S most vibrant club volleyball competition is to get under way this week.

The Verulam and Districts Volleyball Association (VDVA) 2018 Indoor League campaign will feature 10 teams from around Durban.

The Maidstone Volleyball Club of Tongaat are back to defend the title they have won for the past three years.

But they are expected to face stiff competition from VDVA stalwarts Brindhaven Titans, Dark Horses and Scorpions, while newcomers Grove End, Randsons and Volleybrawlers could also upset the apple cart.

Newly elected VDVA president Deshan Govender expects some exciting clashes throughout the season.

“The fact that we are the only league in the country that plays both the indoor and outdoor version of the sport contributes to a high skill level with the teams,” Govender said.

The indoor competition will continue to be staged at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre, while outdoor volleyball will take place at the Verulam Recreation Grounds.

In addition to the league competitions, Govender confirmed VDVA would also host a few knock-out tournaments.

“We look to be having at least one outdoor tournament which will be compulsory for all clubs. We will also have two indoor tournaments which will include the traditional Kollkan Cup.”

Govender said they would place special emphasis on developing the sport among junior players and women over the next two years.

He added: “We are always looking to scout players at school level and help them transition to club volleyball.

“Our aim for 2019 is to get more women playing structured volleyball. Hopefully some of the female readers would like to get involved. They are most welcome to make contact with us so we can plan for 2019.”
