Generous dose of levity sure to get laughs

- KARINDA JAGMOHAN

FROM government agents to local celebs, none will be spared in a new comedy show by veteran Durban comedian Mervyn Pillay at Sibaya’s izulu Theatre this month.

Mervyn from Durban is a comical throwback to Pillay’s experiences while growing up in the city, including his run-ins with “gold diggers, sugar daddies, members of parliament and municipal service delivery”.

Pillay’s observation of the city culture is expected to tickle the funny bone.

The self-proclaimed “proudly South African Durbanite of Indian Origin” has 30 years of stage experience.

“When I was a kid, I played outside. There were no electronic gadgets to keep us entertained.

This is where I developed an interest in dance and comedy,” he said.

“Mervyn from Durban” spent most of his time perfecting his acting skills at the local cinema.

“I literally lived next to ‘Dreamland’,” he said.

“Dreamland” was among the local cinemas that inspired Pillay to pursue his dream career in the entertainment industry.

Pillay said he was proud to develop his own style of comedy.

His upcoming solo act on April 27 and 28, is “a must for all comedy lovers”, he added. But be warned, the comedy evening carries an age restriction of 13.

Tickets are at R100 and R120, available at Computicket and the Sibaya Casino box office.
