Nene dedicates song to Mama Winnie

- SIPHELELE BUTHELEZI

‘I Am’ by SULTRY Durban songstress Sindi Nene has bid farewell to Struggle hero Winnie Madikizela-mandela with a song dedicated to her.

The song, I am (Winnie Mandela) was released as a tribute to the “Mother of the Nation” who was buried in Fourways yesterday.

“Winnie Mandela was and will continue to be a symbol of hope, freedom and inspiration not only to young South African people, but the whole of Africa. What she stood for is bigger than just one group of people.”

In the song, she sings: I strived and inspired and I fought to acquire, I lived and served, now I will rest. Freedom, freedom, freedom, to the land, freedom.

In another verse she sings: I am a leader ‘cause I am a woman, I am an African Queen and I am, a winner of Africa, the mother land of freedom fighters, of conquerers. From Africa I was made with super powers, It’s an African thing.

Nene rose to fame during on Idols SA in 2010 where she made it to the top three.

The musician said although she never met Madikizela-mandela, she was inspired by her.

“It would have been a great honour to have met her.”

After a four-year hiatus from the industry, Nene returned last year and is set to launch her self-titled album on April 28 under Arthur Mafokate’s 999 Music label.

At some point Nene faced challenges and became depressed when things went sour in the industry. She said the challenges taught her not to wait on anyone to create an opportunity for her. “For the first time in years I’ve managed to create an album that reflects who I really am.”
