Dstv ripping us off with repeats

IT IS very unfortunate that Dstv does not have a competitor as I feel we are being ripped off with the prices they charge.

They are also very clever in cost cutting various things like their TV book, which is now printed on cheap paper, in a very small font (which I can barely read) and greyscale printing.

The other nasty thing they do is to never put the full sports programmes on a bouquet – forcing sport lovers to subscribe to the full package.

They advertise wonderful things for children, horrendous reality programmes and very few programmes of substance.

As we all know, almost the whole book of programmes is repeats. Endlessly. So Dstv, please don’t tell me all this is “for viewers’ pleasure”. It’s not.

I’m a pensioner and widow who enjoys sport and good dramas. Sadly, I shall soon have to give up my subscription, which I’ve had since 1982 because it’s soon going to cost R1000 a month. Despicable. A pensioner’s discount would help. Even SABC does that.

How can anyone still support Zuma?

KINDLY allow me to expand on the letter from Reggie Chellan of Brookdale headed “The people of SA don’t need Zuma” (Sunday Tribune, April 15).

How can anyone support

Jacob Zuma in the face of the unbelievable damage that was inflicted upon South Africa during his presidency? For Zuma, his family and his cabinet to openly collaborate to enrich a family of foreigners at the expense of hopelessly poor South Africans is beyond comprehension and logic.

That some people support

Zuma still is proof of incredible stupidity, and that includes ANC provincial task team co-ordinator Sihle Zikalala, members of the provincial legislature and mayor Zandile Gumede.

We have an abundance of natural resources and yet we stagnate because of a few corrupt politicians. Zuma must go to jail like any criminal if found guilty. We, as law-abiding citizens, are resolute. We are ashamed to be called South Africans, particularly members of the ANC who know what the movement stands for. LINDIWE DLAMINI

Medical scheme fees questionable

MEDICAL aid schemes have been giving doctors 4% to 6% fee increases a year for 20 years or so.

Yet the administration fees for medical schemes has been constantly going up and the increases in medical aid contributions has been in excess of inflation – 10% to 12% per annum over the same period.

The processing claims are now all automated and much less labour dependent which means the cost of processing medical claims has come down and yet administration fees have gone up.

What increases have all the medical aid scheme trustees and management given themselves? What fancy cars and fancy offices and business-class tickets do medical schemes’ trustees and management award themselves using money from scheme members? Schemes give service providers such low increases while charging members much more in contributions.

The health minister needs to relook at the composition of the Medical Aid Council.
