Radio Islam scoops an esteemed award
FOR bringing the Muslim community together and sharing the values of South African culture on-air, Radio Islam International scooped another Liberty Radio Award last week.
The station was inducted into the radio industry’s “Hall of Fame”.
Radio Islam is a nichemarket radio station based in Johannesburg that focuses on Islamic content.
The station has in the past been honoured by what was used to be known as the MTN Radio awards.
The event in Sandton last week saw the station being celebrated for its shows and station manager Haider Ali Dhorat, pictured, for his leadership and contribution to the industry over 20 years.
The station was nominated for nine awards, including for its Morning Drive Show with Sabahuul Muslim and evening show, The Daily Round-up, which is hosted by Durban-based anchor Junaid Kharsany.
Sabahuul Muslim won the award for best news and actuality show on a community radio station.
Of Dhorat’s induction, Kharsany said: “He (Dhorat) started Radio Islam in his small house with one presenter and an engineer, and it now employs almost 70 presenters and engineers.”
Kharsany added: “He is responsible for having made the station the media powerhouse that it is today and his guidance and attention to production detail are well-known and appreciated by those in the industry and our audience.”
