A minimalist Fox: when less is truly more

- ASHWEN SINGH

THE VW Fox is a seriously undervalued contender in the community of KZN street car culture.

There are many opinions as to why this is so, but none that really detracts from the perception that the Volkswagen Fox is really just a Citi

Golf with a boot.

As such, it’s just as scaleable and, consequently, just as much fun.

Pringle Stephen, 24, is a Volkswagen enthusiast and the owner of this week’s featured vehicle, a mean-looking 1989 VW Fox 1.6.

Stephen works as a dispatch manager and lives in Chatsworth, south of Durban.

His Volkswagen Fox 1.6, which is incidentally used as a daily runner, features minimalist mechanical upgrades.

An 1 800cc cylinder head is mated to the car’s factory-fitted 1 600cc engine block and a FFZ gearbox.

The car also has a performance exhaust system.

The exterior flaunts a new paint job with tinted headlights and tail-lights. The car also has an old school chin spoiler, custom stickers, HID lighting kit, as well as the sporty aesthetics of having the VW logo on the front headlights.

In stark comparison, the interior was kept standard.

This Fox further boasts a 40mm lowered suspension system. This is mated to a set of 17-inch Racing Hart mag wheels, which were matched with a set of Dunlop 205/40/17 rubbers.

I have yet to come across a VW that isn’t host to a rocking sound system. This one is no different and features a Jebson media player head unit, which was wired by way of eight-gauge wiring to a high-quality set of Sony sixinch mids, 6x9s and Tweeters.

These run off a Dixon four-channel 2 000W amplifier.

Stephen did not disclose how much was spent on this build.
