A spicy brand of humour

- TRIBUNE REPORTER

AFTER sold out shows across the country, the Hot Masala Comedy Show is cooked up and ready to be served to Durban audiences next weekend.

Hot Masala Comedy, which takes place at the

Moses Mabhida Stadium’s

Cuba Lounge on April 28, features stand-up comics and viral video stars Masood Boomgaard, Bash with Tash and Meshantan Naidoo.

The trio will take the audience on a hilarious cultural adventure, tapping into their experiences, growing up in Indian communities in different parts of Durban, telling laugh-out-loud funny anecdotes about overbearing parents, drunk uncles and down right crazy grandparents.

The show will also be peppered with great gags on everyday stuff like relationships, the economy, politics and social media. There’s bound to be something for everyone.

Bash with Tash, real name Natashia Portrag, shot to fame in December 2016 when she spontaneously uploaded a comic commentary by herself on Facebook which soared to hundreds of thousands of views. Subsequent videos only heightened her popularity and now she has legions of fans.

Bash with Tash is best known for her incredible ability to improvise on stage and crowd interaction. Her spontaneity ensures no two shows are the same.

She credits her success to good work ethic.

“I’m on a journey and not in a competition. A good and humble heart has been the key to my success. This is a passion and not simply a job that needs to be done,” explains Portrag.

“My style of comedy is very different. I am not a scripted comic and every performance is personalised,” says Portrag.

Fresh from his recent tours of Australia, Dubai and the UK, Durbanite Masood Boomgaard is best known for his unique comedic take on current affairs and trends, tackling a variety of topics from politics and sport to the economy and relationships. He often also uses the stage to reflect on his childhood and experiences growing up in a mixed race family.

Look out for his spot-on impersonations of the likes of Jacob Zuma and Donald Trump.

Boomgaard has performed with some of the best in the business across the country and has a few solo shows under his belt. He recently performed his show African Indian on London’s West End and received rave reviews.

Last, audiences can look forward to the comic styling of Meshantan Naidoo, widely regarded as one of the hottest up-and-coming acts in SA Comedy. Original and wildly amusing, Naidoo made his name with the Facebook video blog Straight Choons with Meshantan Naidoo, where he candidly takes on current topics.

Tickets are R120 and are available from Computicket.
