Durban’s ‘Bollywood secret’ gaining in traction

- KARINDA JAGMOHAN

A BHANGRA party on the umhlanga pier on a Saturday morning was an unusual site, but the “Bollywood secret” is trending online as Durbanites gather to celebrate the city’s stunning sunrises.

Iqraam Rahim, director of Rampage Dance Company, has been the talk of the town on Durban’s Instagram profiles this week since his Bollywood-styled Secret Sunrise event went viral.

The event has a Facebook page as part of a brand that brings people together on a weekend morning for fun group events.

Event locations are shared with ticket holders 24 hours before the event.

Rahim staged the event to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his Bollywood musical, The Eastern Evening, and it reflected Durban culture through dance.

“Jane Killian and I worked tirelessly to encapsulate an event with the benefits of spiritual growth, fitness and the celebration of one’s self through the medium of dance expression,” said Rahim.

“Set against the backdrop off the Indian Ocean with the umhlanga pier providing the platform, the sold-out event drew Durbanites of all ages in true South African fun and festivity,” he said.

Rahim said that as the new trend caught on, he might consider a second event in spring.

Other, variously themed, Secret Sunrise events will continue to take place in Durban. For details, visit the ‘Secret Sunrise Durban’ Facebook page.
