Mk2 Jetta’s modifications a labour of love

- ASHWEN SINGH

THERE is nothing mild-mannered about a VW Jetta Mk2. Built as the sedan version of the ever-popular VW Golf Mk2, the VW Jetta is every bit as capable, scaleable and, perhaps most importantly, every bit as much fun as its hatch stablemate.

This week we feature Chatsworth resident and car enthusiast Sean Naicker’s awesome 1989 Volkswagen Jetta CSX Mk2.

Naicker, whose interests include building engines and auto diagnostics, works as a motor technician at a leading auto franchise.

His car came factory-fitted with a well-powered and economical 1 800cc carburettor power plant.

It features mechanical upgrades such as a retrofitted 1.8EV motor with a gas-flowed cylinder head, a VW carburettor fitted with bigger jets, as well as a performance branch manifold mated to a full Cowley 53mm exhaust system.

The vehicle has a 60mm lowered suspension system, courtesy of a set of Koenic springs. These are mated to a set of 17-inch BBS RS mag wheels, 7.5J in the front and 8.5J at the rear.

The exterior and interior have minimalist styling cues and as such, for the most part, were kept relatively standard.

A decent but “low-key” sound system comprising a Pioneer head unit, a pair of 6x9 speakers and a quartet of mid-range speakers complete the sound installation on this Jetta. It was not disclosed how much was spent on this build.

As for most auto enthusiasts, Naicker’s vehicle remains a “labour of love” and so will probably continue to remain a “work in progress”. In this context, Naicker is now building a 2-litre motor to install in his Jetta. Naicker is a member of the popular VW Illest Owners Crew, a car club with philanthropic objectives.
