HERE has rarely been such a good time to be an entrepreneur in the hair and beauty industry as trendy celebrities launch their own brands, driving the demand among millennials.

The team at Kolorz, an online business, aims to change the face of the make-up industry by catering to women from all walks of life.

Kolorz was co-founded by Kabeer Gani and Waseema Carrim.

Zakeer Gani is a third director, bringing on board a wealth of experience from the financial sector.

Zakeer, 23, and the team have leveraged off the hype for better and more innovative beauty products to establish Kolorz as the only store in South Africa to offer service and sales in both hair and make-up.

Born and raised in Potchefstroom, Gani attended the Ferdinand Postma High School and went on to study at the North West University, where he was the youngest Honours graduate in management accounting.

Raised in a family entrenched in business, Gani’s passion for entrepreneurship began at a young age and he acknowledges his parents were instrumental in creating the foundation he needed to become successful.

So going into business was a natural progression for him, notwithstanding his professional qualification as an accountant.

“I never really had a passion for accounting. I always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and I didn’t believe that I could do that in the corporate space.

“Through my business, I am able to explore my philanthropy and am creating a foundation.

Our first project is a pageant for children with cancer and various disabilities, supported by people such as Casey de Witt (Miss Africa Transcontinental 2018) and Simone Roets (Miss Transcontinental SA).”

The business stocks some of the biggest make-up and hair brands in the world, such as Kryolan, GHD and Joico.

It also offers international brands such as Tarte Cosmetics, Colourpop, Huda Beauty and Morphe, with 60% of Gani’s online clients coming from the Kwazulu-natal market.

He plans to open a store in Kwazulu-natal soon, with his flagship already in place on the East Rand in Gauteng.

“No one has said a young man couldn’t dominate the beauty industry. I have big ambitions and plan to move South Africa forward in the context of this industry.”

Citing Warren Buffett as his inspiration, Gani’s greatest lesson as an entrepreneur has been learnt through the work of Buffett, who has a “never-give-up” mentality even in the midst of uncertainty.

Resigning from a corporate job to enter into a high-end cosmetic market in a time of uncertainty served as a testament to Gani’s resilience.

He advises emerging entrepreneurs to never listen to the naysayers who would stifle their dreams.

He also says he tries to remain 10 steps ahead of competitors and work harder and smarter. Above all, he says that one should never take people for granted and always remember one’s roots – staying humble in a cut-throat environment could make all the difference.

Gani aspires to see Kolorz become the biggest independent cosmetic house in South Africa by 2020. He aims to attract investors who can share his vision.

Beyond establishing a profitable business, Gani is focused on changing lives and creating a better world.

“I am motivated solely by the fact that I want to make lives better. That pushes me to work hard every day and to remember what I am here for.

“Even in moments of failure, I remain focused. I believe that if you are not failing at times, it’s a sign that you are not doing anything innovative. The only real failure is when you stop trying.”
