- ALYSSIA BIRJALAL

HE IS no stranger to pageantry, but being crowned Mister Teen World 2018 assigned 15-year-old Diolan Govender a degree of responsibility and he’s excited about rising to the challenge.

He took the title in Bodrum, Turkey, earlier this month at the World League of Beauty and Fashion.

“Last year, I won Mister Teen Kwazulu-natal. Later that year I was crowned Mister King of the Universe (first prince) and Mister Rainbow Nation (first prince). making Mister Teen World my fourth pageant,” he said.

He defeated teenage models from across the world by simply showcasing his talent, presenting skills, creativity, displaying the diverse South African culture and beauty of this country.

Two and a bit weeks later, the responsibilities associated with his recent crowning has already begun for the Grade 11, Crawford College pupil.

“After winning this prestigious title, my duty is to do charity work in South Africa and promote the title using local and international media. Earlier this year, I started my own Young Excellence campaign aimed at improving the lives of the youth with motivation through the medium. I do this by visiting children’s homes and orphanages,” said Govender.

He described his his time in Turkey as incredible.

“Bodrum captured my heart. I made so many friends from all walks of life, networked with professionals from around the world and made memories that will last forever. While in Bodrum I did horse-riding, shopping and water sports in the limited free time we had,” Govender said.

Juggling his time between school and the duties of his reign can become tricky, but Govender says he thrives working under pressure.

“Nothing is impossible until you try. If you want something in life, you have to work for it. There are 24 hours in a day. It’s a matter of how you use your time.

“I am not the best at time management, but I do work well under pressure, which allows me to get all my tasks done within the time frame,” said the youngster.

His advice to aspiring contestants is to get up, get going and stay focused.

“Never change who you are to please the judges. Stay true to who you are and put your best effort into everything you do because there will always be someone better than you,” he said.

When he completes his schooling, he intends to study for a communications degree before venturing into marketing and the media business.

For now, he is living his dream as an entertainer.
