Plenty of bark and bite when done right

- ASHWEN SINGH

THE Volkswagen Caddy has always been a popular vehicle, which, like its stablemate, the “forever young” Golf 1, enjoyed an epic production run, spanning roughly three decades.

The new Caddy, while poles apart from its predecessor in design and engineering, still embodies the VW essence of being fun to drive and, perhaps most importantly, highly scalable.

Suren Devo is a 37-year-old from Grove End, Phoenix, who owns this week’s featured vehicle, a

Caddy Panel Van. Devo, a director of local automotive body repair shop Removadent, has a host of interests that includes cars, antiques, collectables and woodwork.

Mechanically, Devo’s car boasts a quick, powerful 1.8-litre fuel-injected 20-valve turbocharged engine, the likes of which can be found under the hood of a Golf 4 GTI, augmented by a Primaforce exhaust system.

The exterior customisation includes body wrapping, Golf 7 bumpers, bonnet, headlights and boot spoiler, while the interior has customised seating and upholstery.

The suspension system was upgraded with the fitment of a set of JOM Blueline coil-overs, mated to a set of 20-inch OEM Vossen mag wheels.

They say no VW is complete without an impressive sound system. This one boasts a Nemesis installation, including a trio of Rockford Fosgate subwoofers, a quartet of Rockford Fosgate mids, Targa D4 Street subwoofers and a set of 6x9 speakers. The system is wired to a Kenwood Double DIN unit and powered by a Targa 12k amplifier. SERVICE PROVIDERS: Prima Force Exhausts Nemesis Audio Removadent
