Chatsworth to host second Juniort20 Bash

- THAHIR ASMAL

THE second annual Junior T20 Bash gets under way next month with more than 40 teams already in the draw.

The competition, which is hosted by Chatsworth Sporting Cricket Club, caters from under-11,13,15 and 18 players.

“Last year’s Junior T20 Bash was an overwhelming success as was evident in the massive parental support for the games. The standard of cricket displayed was of a high calibre. Enjoyment was the key factor,” Sporting vice-president Balan Naicker said.

The tournament has grown tremendously – only 12 teams entered last year. This time around the competition will welcome clubs from Chatsworth, Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, Reservoir Hills, Phoenix, Illembe, Penzance, Durban Central, Tongaat and umlazi.

“The size of the competition this year means we will require more venues. Matches will be played primarily in Chatsworth, but we will also have games in Pietermaritzburg, Reservoir Hills and Pinetown,” Naicker explained.

Naicker says the drier winter months is the best time for youngsters to hone their skills.

“Juniors play very little cricket during the course of the normal season due to rain. So having the tournament during this period means the youngsters play more cricket and we keep them interested,” Naicker.

The shorter format helps youngsters stay engaged on the field.

“T20 cricket is one way of keeping youngsters and parents interested in the game. Cricket is a long game, and we are competing with other sports which are shorter. This type of tournament represents our commitment to encourage people to stay in the sport,” said Naicker.
